The Power of Reflection During Tough Times
Everyone can agree that we are living in uncertain times. There is much to focus on such as health, safety, job security, etc. No one knows what the future holds and at the same time we are hurrying to set up safety nets. The world is on pause at the moment and humans are necessitated to step back from a frenetic pace.
If we can afford time for reflection, what are we spending our time contemplating? It was ironic as I came across a social media post where someone made the observation that many people disliked being alone because that meant we are forced to confront who we really are. This resonated because if there was ever a time for reflection and introspection, this is it.
What are some take aways while spending time home? What do we value most? Better yet, when we get back to our routines, what are some of the introspections we can carry forward? Many companies had to adapt to a brand new environment. Some had to completely re-define their objective to serve the greater good. Grocery shopping as we knew it completely up ended within a matter of weeks. Many of us are ordering online and many eateries scrambled to develop apps and curbside pickup and delivery. Judging by our social media photos, cooking at home and meal planning became much more important. Aside from the fact of basic necessity, are we more conscious of the choices we feed our bodies? Are we cherishing quality time with loved ones? Statistics are showing that pets are experiencing positive behaviors due to their owners being home much more than ever before. As the country eases into a re-opening, how can we adapt our quarantine routines into daily routines?
As much as we may be feeling the effects of cabin fever maybe we are learning to take a break and enjoy a moment. Families taking strolls with babies in coaches at a safe distance can remind us we can make it a habit on Sunday afternoons. Going to the yard and tending to a garden can teach us to observe nature unfolding in her own time. Our pets can show us the unconditional love we give and receive. How we nourish our bodies mindfully. We don’t have a map to unchartered territory just yet but with baby steps, we have an opportunity to design and navigate the map ourselves.
